Birds on a wire facing different directions
When we stand at the threshold of changing unhealthy behavior, we soon realize some new choices will have to be made. We will discover that our behavior has strands that attach to many parts of our daily life. When life gets complicated, our old reflexes will be triggered; we’ll be tempted to stick with what we know and have used in the past. But slipping back into old behaviors won’t help us deal with challenges in the long run. If we’re truly tired of suffering and the inevitable consequences our habits have caused, we’re going to need to make different choices in all areas of our life – not just the decision to eliminate the compulsion itself. Our habit is going to have to be dug up by the roots, and for that new tools and practices will be required.
In the long run, we shape our lives and we shape
ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And, the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.
~ Eleanor Roosevelt
